BotijÒN
My inspiration took place in my house's basement. I was amazed by the foundation of the whole house which is Helsinki's geology. I started to think about this solid base where the things lie, like nature as the foundation and base of everything. Constructions lie on the bedrock, with no fracture or weakness. This magic space was also full of sensory signs; the sound of pedestrian footfalls, the water going up and down through pipes, and also the sound of the wind through the ventilation shafts. My basement was alive. I wanted to go back to my "basement", to my roots, and take this as my starting point for the design process.
BotijÒN is a traditional Spanish porous earthenware jug which is not only re-usable, but also keeps water cool by taking advantage of natural energy sources. This is a process called evaporative cooling, whereby the inside water that is filtered to the outside through pores in the earthenware uses its own thermal energy to evaporate.
I redesigned the earthenware jug to give users--and especially people living in warmer countries--the possibility to drink cold water, turning heat into a refreshing effect while drinking water in a more comfortable temperature. Nowadays, when temperatures are rapidly rising, botijÒN can be a good tool to save energy from refrigeration. A different and sustainable way to drink.
